With the beginning of this week the portal was officially launched and all services were opened for registration.
The following press release was published:
Namibia’s first regional Internet Portal and free E-Mail Service takes-off
Windhoek, 22 August 2005 – Former Polytechnic IT Student launches Namibian Internet Portal with free E-Mail and Homepage Service, regional Search Engine, Link Directory and Discussion Forums.
Namibia’s first truly regional Internet Portal has been launched under the address http://web.com.na, offering a variety of new services especially designed for Namibian Internet users.
The portal features Namibia’s first web-based E-Mail Service which allows users to register a free E-Mail Address, a regional Search Engine for Namibian Internet Sites, a Homepage Service which enables users to easily build own homepages, a Namibian Link Directory and Online Discussion Forums.
Users can register online for free to get instant access to all portal services, while no registration is needed to use the Search Service, the Link Directory and to read in the Forums. The overall design of the portal is very clearly structured to reduce the loading time of pages and to help even inexperienced users to use the portal and all services easily.
Uz Kretzschmar, the former Polytechnic B.Tech Student who developed the portal, notes: “I wanted to create a platform which brings widely used, but not yet locally available Internet services to Namibia and I wanted these services to adapt as much as possible to local requirements. For many people, E-Mail and Search are the first services they are confronted with when logging onto the Internet, but users in Namibia had to rely on international or South-African services so far when they for example wanted to use E-Mail or search for Namibian Internet sites. This had to be changed!”
The portal is developed for a wide audience, serving private and semi-professional users alike. In addition to the fully-featured E-Mail service, which includes an address book, spam-filters, anti-virus protection and more, the portal’s easy-to-use online tools allow users to create and publish their own homepage as simply as writing a normal text document.
Entering a link into the portal’s Link Directory offers the opportunity, especially for business-owners and organizations, to direct more visitors to their internet sites. The portal’s Discussion Forums allow the free exchange of ideas, information, and opinions on various topics.
We invite all interested readers to have a look at the portal and to sign up for its services at: http://web.com.na.
An Exchange Student from the German University of Applied Sciences Jena, Uz Kretzschmar studied Information Technology at the Polytechnic of Namibia since August 2003. The development of the web.com.na portal was part of his Bachelor Thesis in Internet Business Engineering.
