most of us prefer to name our kids with other country name, why?imagine a damara lady or wambo with nicoline name, it sound funy and shame to what belong to us.
Haraeb is a damara
Nangula is oshiwambo
Coetzee is cloured or bastr.
Haingula is a kavango
Masule or nasilele is a caprivian. Please, we must respect our cultures.
Where do you see a white man/woman with a name, eg. Kapenda or shaanika. noo!! Only us, because we do not respect or like imtation of other people s culture.
This is my own opinion,my name and my kids are reflect my culture s name.

Africa needs to learn to respect their own, it's no special to try to be a European, we should respect our religion otherwise nobody gonna respect it, be proud of being African and let's work together to put Africa on the map

I dont think naming your kid with a foreign name is a problem, as long as you know its meaning and you can always associated it with your culture. We are living in different countries but we are all the same. why the hell do i have to name my kid for instance "Mwatota, Letu, Ndeuya, Mwayola, Mulongeni, Ndayakohambo or even Haingura"? For instance, who are you trying to insult or tell through your name's child?

Director thanx a million for bringing this topic to our attention. its true we have to respect our names.
African names should be used till the end of time. i personally have three names and nowadays i just realised that people now call me by the other foreign name that was not so popular when i was at primary school. i can honestly tell all of you that we should try to promote our african names coz they usually have meanings and are always inherited from our fore fathers, unlike the jacksons, williams, anthonys, glorias, frans, leonards, Rodneys etc. we name our children by these names with no history/meanings attached to them and that makes us loosing the blessings.
So please lets keep our Shikongos, simasikus, Hainguras, Goagoses, Kavaris, etc.

Director, are you talking about surnames or names????
Because, you made me laugh when you said "Where do you see a white man/woman with a name,eg.Koepman Kapenda"for sure you won't hear a white man/woman with a name "Koepman Kapenda" because if that Koepman's daddy is white, than sure Koepman will have a "white"surname and not Kapenda.
And I think when it comes to names, any mom/dad can name their kids any name they want to.......as long as they know the meaning and where the name originate from......
Well,that's my opinion..........

Dawg,
The issue of names is complicated, I agree with you that as Africans we need to decolonize our minds, you would find those who think that the kid’s name should be modern, Nangula under this context my not be as “fancy/modern” as Trevor, Nicole etc, Then you have another group of Complication brought by the church, in my time you needed a Biblical name to be baptized and surely your wont find Mbanganyati any where in the Testament.
But for this generation, it pains me to see parents shying away from their cultures; I have four Boys myself, namely: Tangeni, Mandela, Lungameni and Hanganeni. I am sure you understand about Mandela right!
However, I am still stuck with Sacramento, and our surname is Biblical too, But Oshili I promise you if the bonus is good this year, I will change it.
