It was reported that the Varsity has defended guidelines laid down that prospective black medical students had to have a 74% senior certificate pass, coloureds 78%, Indians 88% and whites 91%.
The guidelines are aimed at addressing the past injustice and racial imbalances in the profession. I thing it is a good policy, I remember that in the past both in South Africa and Namibia, black could only become teachers, nurses or police officers.
1. Can this create a wrong perception among the students to say, blacks are less deserving coz are admitted on a low percentage, which may result in a low self esteem for the would be students?
2. Should our tertiary institution perhaps also have different criteria for students from rural schools for example?

Some people might think that the past injustices in terms of differences in Educational systems which prepared some skins better than others, blacks deserve a grace period.
