According to the 2008 HIV sentinel sero surveillance report which is conducted among pregnant women at selected sites, the trend of HIV prevalence in pregnant women has increased from 4.2% in 1992 to 19.3% in 2000 (see annexure 1). The HIV prevalence among pregnant women varied from 33% to 7%. The four sites with the highest prevalence were all urban areas. Katima Mulilo (33%), Windhoek(31%), Oshakati(28%) and Walvis Bay (28%). HIV prevalence is also high in rural sites close to main roads, such as Onandjokwe(23%) and Engela(23%). Only in the three sites, the HIV prevalence remained below 10%, Rehoboth(9%) and Opuwo(7%).
