Namibia is country of deversy culture and inhabitant different tribes which have useful knowledge and practices. However, I am of concern that this knowledge will at some point not be passed to the next generation if not recorded. Here I mean that people should start writing books on most important indigenous knowledge so that they will be available in Libraries of the country for the future generation to read and know about them. Talking of "Indigenous knowledge" is a broad term but I think you understand what I mean here.

What do you think?

I am not sure if i understand your point. I don't want to pretend. The point seems understandable but it is close-ended a little bit. Can you please make it more open-ended?

Ok Shindenge, I mean for example in Oshiwambo People do brew tradional beer, "Oshikundu" etc. but if you can agree with me 30% of young oshiwambo girls nowadays they don't know how to do this neither some of them know the ingredient or the process of brewing itself, That is just one example, also we do have recongnised traditional healers in this country and they are healing using different knowledge, although they pass their knowledge to their close selected relatives I feel that it need to be recorded somehow some where. hope u get me better now.

Well done Kachokwe, now I fully understand.

You are right my friend. I think it is a time for the book authors like Shiimi ya Shiimi, Petrus Amakali, Paavo Hasheela, L. Nghifikwa and many others, to start writings books where all cultural norms, styles and roles are to be narrated. Those books should then be made part of school curricula. Most of our people have in fact deviated from their cultural ettiquttes and adapt European and western cultures.

They perceive anyone who practice cultures and traditional styles as conservative or primitive, and hence no one would want to socialize with him/her.

I am from Oshiwambo culture, and my granny has been telling me, for instance, that during their time, one of the cultural norms was that no one should practice sex before marriage. It was a taboo and immoral for a girl to fall pregnant before marriage. It was a belief that every woman who is married is a virgin. Therefore, immediately after marriage, the first sexual intercourse between new couple was observed by parents. Their bed will be made up with white linens, and after their first sexual intercourse, the parents (especially for the man) will check on the bed whether they will find blood stains on the linens (as a result of a woman's virginity broken or whatever you call it).

If no blood stains are found on the sheets, the parents recommend a divorce because their son did not marry a woman other than "ehengu" (a whore).

Nowadays, all those traditional values are overlooked and people fell prey to western cultures. If we could have been adhering to our cultural principles, we would not have such a high rate of HIV infection in our country.

You point is really constructive, you deserve a round of applauds.

I pause for a moment.

Shindenge, Thank for your comments on my post and for your example you give, I 100% agree with you, mostly as u said it could have also reduce the HIV infection. You mentioned some prominent Oshiwambo authors there, yes, it could be them, but let not just depend on them but to have ourselves as young Namibian to take over and I think the right time is now while they are the just to tape something from them and approach some elders and knowledgeable people in the Indigenous Knowledge interview them and start recording this knowledge in local languages as well as in English.

And here, I am not only referring to the Oshiwambo people, but I wish all the indigenous knowledge of different ethnic groups here in Namibia to be recorded as it is and preserved for the future generation of this country. I think that way Namibia will have its original identity for ever and will help in the development of the economy. Believe me here or not, India and chain have got high technologies and sustainable economy today, but if you watch careful this people developed those thing from their indigenous knowledge. e.g. I was surprise one day a Tv documentary was shown on a television where a man was discovering water which is underground, by just using a stick.
